Juno Beach Great Neighborhoods Association

We've had an exciting meeting on November 17 as we hosted some very special guests from the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary!

Because of the unique Natural Areas throughout our town, we enjoy a special relationship with the wildlife that lives in there.  For the most part the critters that live there stay there.  But as development crowds out their habitat they sometimes wander off and get injured on our roadways or in a fight with a domestic animal.  When that happens, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary is there to help nurture these animals back to health.

We had a great time at our Beach Cook-out on September 19.  The weather was great as the rain held off for us.  Thanks Donna for letting us use your grill and cooking up the food for us, and thanks to everyone who brought along snacks to share.

About 30 Members came to a Cook-Out at Oak Harbour from 6 to 8 PM on Sunday, May 23.  Soft drinks and food were donated, so there was no charge and no expense for our Association.  It was a great way for us to meet each other and enjoy the sunset.  Thanks to Wayne and Jean for cooking up the grub!

This meeting was held at Town Center from 6 to 7 PM, and the nice weather allowed us to meet outside in the courtyard.  There were 9 of us attending, so we spent our time reviewing our projects and activites of the past year and what changes to make for next year.  Highlights included:

• We decided to do arrange regular Neighborhood Cleanups for one Saturday morning each month, and ask for donations to cover our costs of supplies.  The Town Public Works Department offered to help out however they could.  We'll need to get some safety vests to wear for cleanups along roadways. 
• We decided to try to make a regular meeting schedule so people could plan ahead to attend.
• We should go on a group tour of the Jupiter Lighthouse sometime this summer or fall.
• Some type of reward or recognition should be given to Members who sign up new Members.  A book of restaurant special coupons being sold by the Kiwanis Club was mentioned as a good incentive.
• A Neighbor-in-Need Program should be started, and someone will contact the town Code Enforcement department to ask if they could refer any cases to us for help.
• We should have a cookout or fun event in lieu of our next Membership Meeting

Our 2nd meeting of the New Year was held from 6 to 7 PM at the Oceanview United Methodist Church. 

Highlights included:

• Frank Griffith, head of the Natural Areas section of Palm Beach County Environmental Resource Management (ERM) speaking on the new trails, a new pond, and other changes coming to the Juno Dunes Natural Area
• Damian Peduto, the Planning & Zoning Director of the Town of Juno Beach giving us an update on all the stalled development projects in town
• Kayak Tour info organized by Cindy Black

This was the first meeting of the New Year, and our first at the Oceanview United Methodist Church. 

The Meeting was held from 6 to 7 PM and featured:

• Mort levine, Mayor of Juno Beach, speaking on our town financial condition, the Safe Streets Program, and upcoming town projects
• Bob Friedman, Chairman of Palm Beach County MPO, speaking on the funding of County transportation projects and future Tri-Rail stations coming to Jupiter and Palm Beach Gardens
• Kayak Trip organized by Cindy Black coming soon!
• Members Raffle: Prize donated by Don Felicella (autograghed copy of A History of Juno Beach by Dan Corbett) and won by Nicole Bouthillette

The Meeting was held on November 18 from 7 to 8 at the Town Center.  Highlights included:

• Blue Friends Group presentation by Lynne Wells of Loggerhead Marinelife Center
• Plans made for future Beach Cleanups, headed up by Dewey Mathews
• Election of Will Weber to the Board of Directors
• Report by Nicole Bouthillette on increased enforcement of our Motorcycle Noise Ordinance
• Report by Jesus Tejeda on roadway striping to improve pedestrian safety in the New Palm Beach Heights area
• Members Raffle: Prize donated by Cathy's Beach Connection Restaurant

This meeting was held on September 29, 2009  6:30 PM in the Town Center Celestial Conference Room

Results of the Walkability Audit (click here) were discussed, and the most walkable block turned out to be the west side of US 1 from Floral Drive south to the Hampton Inn.  The Audit also noted some sidewalk repairs needed, lack of shade trees, and missing pavement striping.

Other neighborhood concerns were also discussed, including commercial trucks driving through residential streets, median landscaping on US 1 blocking views of oncoming traffic, light spillover from commercial properties, motorcycle noise, drainage problems, code enforcement needs, and concerns about future developments.

Another meeting was held on October 27, where it was decided to send a letter to the town requesting pavement striping improvements to the Floral Drive and Park Street intersections with US 1, and "No Trucks" signs to be installed to divert truck traffic away from residential streets.   The striping was completed by the Public Works Department in early November, and looks great!

Our 2nd General Membership Meeting was held at Town Center from    7 to 8 PM.  Highlights included:

• Reubin Bishop, Project Manger for Palm Beach County Environmental Resource Department (ERM) discussed the upcoming beach renourishment project
• Neighborhood Improvement Projects
• Brainstorming Session for future speakers
• Major Brian Smith explained Juno Beach's Community Policing program
• Cathy Shea won the raffle!  Thanks to Cathy's Beach Connection Restaurant for donating the raffle prize!!

The meeting was held on August 5, 2009 at 7:30 PM at the Oak Harbour Clubhouse.  

Finances were reviewed, and plans were made for the next General Membership meeting in September.  A list of interesting topics to be covered by speakers at future meetings was started.  A raffle might be held for the members who attend the meeting if we can get a prize donated.

Plans were made to schedule Walkability Audits around town using a Checklist to judge our sidewalks, lighting, safety, etc.
